Light Hydrocarbon

Light hydrocarbon — a colorless, volatile solvent widely used in the paint, resin, thinner and petrochemical industries.

Molecular diagram and droplet of light hydrocarbon — Caspian Ferdows Iranian

Light hydrocarbon is one of the most important petroleum derivatives, obtained from the distillation and processing of the light fractions of crude oil. It is a colorless, clear and volatile liquid with a density below 0.8 g/cm³, and thanks to its high solvency and controlled evaporation it holds a special place across many industries.

Properties & Specifications

Light hydrocarbon consists mainly of short carbon chains (roughly C5–C12), with a boiling range that typically falls between 40 and 200 °C.

  • Appearance: colorless, clear liquid
  • Density: below 0.8 g/cm³
  • Boiling range: 40–200 °C
  • Composition: paraffins, naphthenes and a controlled share of aromatics
  • Solvency: high, suitable for thinning paints and resins
  • Evaporation rate: fast and controlled

Industrial Applications

Because of its solvency and favorable evaporation behavior, light hydrocarbon is used across a wide range of industries:

  • Solvent and thinner in the production of paints, lacquers and polishes
  • Base for a variety of thinners and coating diluents
  • Raw material in the resin and adhesive industries
  • Feedstock for petrochemical units producing ethylene, propylene, benzene and toluene
  • Washing and cleaning solvent for industrial parts and equipment
  • Component in the formulation of chemical products and lubricants
